A new bylaw in Newmarket will ensure the humane treatment of animals.

The town adopted its proposed animal control bylaw, which is an amalgamation of eight updated animal bylaws and focuses on the care of domestic animals, protective care, tethering, muzzling and traps.

Adding a new section on prohibited animals came while town staff was in the process of updating the bylaw. Prohibited animals include ones that can no longer be kept in the town's borders, such as lions, elephants, monkeys and any animal under endangered or protected status.

"The Town of Newmarket is proud to provide a higher level of animal control," Mayor Tony Van Bynen said. "We hope to set an example for other municipalities to support a progressive approach to the protection and treatment of animals."

The bylaw also comes with a list of exemptions including animals receiving care from an accredited veterinary hospital or veterinarian, schools and educational facilities and programs or film or television productions.

The bylaw is effective immediately.
